California Dreamin’

Another surprise from the Romanian new wave that brought 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, this raucous satire centers on a train of US marines (led by Armand Assante) bound for Kosovo in 1999–until a corrupt small-town stationmaster holds them on a customs technicality. The locals see their unexpected guests as tickets to political power or financial advantage, but as the days drag on, sparks fly. Tragically killed just weeks after wrapping this, his only feature, director Cristian Nemescu remains a major talent who left a striking legacy.
