Here Below

France at the end of 1943. Signs are appearing that the German military offensive is starting to crack, and the Resistance begins to step up its activities. While working as a hospital nurse, nun Sister Luce (the excellent Celine Sallette) meets Father Martial (Eric Caravaca, also excellent), a priest working with the Resistance. Powerfully attracted to each other, the two briefly come together, but when Martial decides to back away, the young woman’s world comes crashing down with disastrous results. Working from a real historical incident, director Jean-Pierre Denis has created a taut, suspenseful look at closing months of the war, when suddenly nothing is certain and old values and commitments start to be questioned. As in the director’s earlierMurderous Maids (RDV 2001), HERE BELOW also shows the transformation of private passion into national politics.
