An Evening with Barry Gifford and WILD AT HEART

Noted novelist and screenwriter Barry Gifford comes to the IFC Center for a special 20th Anniversary screening of David Lynch’s WILD AT HEART (1990) on Monday, October 18 at 8:00pm. Winner of the Palme d’Or for Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival, WILD AT HEART was based upon Gifford’s novel of the same name, the first of his novels in the “Sailor & Lula” novels. “I saw Sailor and Lula in love in the middle of a crazy, violent, wild world, and I wanted to go on that trip with them.” Lynch once said about his experience reading the novel. “It’s like looking into the Garden of Eden before things went bad.”
Following the screening, Mr. Gifford will discuss the film and his work, after which he will sign copies of Sailor & Lula: The Complete Novels (Seven Stories Press), a newly published collection of the seven novels that comprise the cycle, as well as copies of his new story collection Sad Stories of the Death of Kings (Seven Stories Press).
The author of more than forty published works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, which have been translated into twenty-eight languages, Barry Gifford writes distinctly American stories for millions of readers around the globe. He is a literary heir of Conrad, of Hemingway, of Algren and Camus, exposing the underbelly of the American Dream in ever-surprising twists and turns. In addition to Wild at Heart, Mr. Gifford’s novel Perdita Durango was made into a feature film by Alex de la Iglesia. He co-wrote, with David Lynch, the film Lost Highway, and with Matt Dillon, the film City of Ghosts. Gifford has received awards from PEN, the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Library Association, the Writers Guild of America, and the Premio Brancati in Italy.
