“Uneasy Riders: ’60s Hollywood” showcases 10 classics from an era when Hollywood broke old taboos and blazed new trails, reflecting to a society undergoing monumental change. The series opens January 12 with Stanley Kubrick’s darkly satirical take on nuclear scares in DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964). Other films in the program reveal the rise of the generation gap and counterculture in work such as Mike Nichols’s THE GRADUATE (1967), Dennis Hopper’s EASY RIDER (1969) and John Schlesinger’s MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969)—the first X-rated Best-Picture Oscar winner. A new type of onscreen violence emerged in American cinema in the 60s, too, from Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO (1960) to Arthur Penn’s BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) and Sam Peckinpah’s THE WILD BUNCH (1969). The series in presented in conjunction with The ’60s: The Years that Changed America, Carnegie Hall’s citywide festival inspired by Robert A. Caro, to be held from January 14 to March 24.
