Scandalously butchered by Penthouse’s Bob Guccione for its 1980 release and disavowed by director Brass and screenwriter Gore Vidal, CALIGULA has suffered a reputation as barely-disguised porn. But this major new restoration, which premiered at Cannes, rehabilitates the filmmakers’ original vision, along with the performances of its impressive cast. Malcolm McDowell stars as Caligula, who eliminates his devious grandfather (Peter O’Toole), weds the ambitious Caesonia (Helen Mirren), and seizes control of the declining Roman Empire, only to descend into depravity, destruction, and madness.
