Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan

Monday, December 25 - Tuesday, December 26, 2023

Intro with Shane Doyle, friend of Shane MacGowan and former owner of NYC club Sin-é Monday, Dec 25 at 7:25

IFC Center presents a birthday tribute to the late Shane MacGowan, legendary frontman for the Celtic punk band The Pogues, with the first New York theatrical screenings of Julien Temple’s 2020 portrait of him. Born on Christmas Day, 1957, MacGowan passed away on November 30, 2023, at age 65.

A cinematic exploration of MacGowan’s story, Temple’s film details Shane’s explosive existence, from his salad days, growing up in Ireland, to time spent on the mean streets of London and embracing the punk scene. To forming The Pogues and the conquering the known universe, we discover MacGowan’s passions, his humor & deep knowledge of music, history, spirituality & popular culture. For this is Shane’s story. A vision of the world through the eyes of the great punk poet himself and an intimate cast of close friends and family members, all channeled through Temple’s inimitable and eternally vibrant lens.

Finished in 2020, CROCK OF GOLD had its North American premiere at DOC NYC and played theaters around the US— but never in New York, due to the city’s long Covid shutdown of cinemas. On the occasion of what would have been MacGowan’s 66th birthday, IFC Center is proud to finally bring New Yorkers a big-screen homage to this larger-than-life talent taken from us too soon.

“A messy, wild, sad and inspirational doc — in other words, a fine tribute to its subject.” – David Fear, Rolling Stone
